With many celebrations and events to mark International Women’s Day ongoing this week, we were delighted to learn recently that two women from Ireland are among the top 10 finalists in the EU Women Innovators Prize competition which celebrates the women entrepreneurs behind Europe's ground-breaking innovations.
Congratulations to Cristina Purtill, CEO of Plio Surgical and Bàrbara Oliveira, CTO and Co-Founder of Luminate Medical, both of whom are finalists in the leadership and rising innovators categories. The winners will be revealed at the opening event for R&I Week on 18 March and we wish Cristin and Bàrbara the best of luck!
Call for participants - TRA 2024 Horizon Europe We’re on the countdown to TRA 2024 (Transport Research Arena Conference) taking place in Dublin next month. It’s the largest European research and technology conference on transport and mobility and will include a dedicated Horizon Europe event offering proposal pitching and one-to-one meeting opportunities on 17 April - find all the details here. New success story: Building the networks of the future
Software Radio Systems is an Irish partner in the Horizon Europe 5G-STARTDUST project which is one of the first projects funded under the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking and aims to tackle the digital divide on internet connection. It’s a big opportunity for the Cork-headquartered company to collaborate with key commercial and academic partners - you can read the full story in our latest case study further below.

The work programme for 2023_24 for ‘Industry’ is now closed and work with the European Commission is on the way to prepare a single work programme for 2025.

We are now midway through the seven-year Horizon Europe Framework Programme. Last year, Irish research groups and companies excelled in marine-related projects, with funding awards totalling €47.2m, up from a figure of €27.8m in 2022.

An easy connection to the internet is increasingly taken for granted in the developed world. But recent studies have found that a third of the world’s population remains unconnected to the World Wide Web - poor and remote areas are most affected.

The team at sustainability firm, 20FIFTY Partners, have been awarded €1.2m in Horizon Europe funding to continue their state-of-the-art research on water circularity, resource recovery, demand reduction and decarbonization of industrial water lifecycles. More info here.
