Horizon Europe - April update

This is a busy time of year for the Horizon Europe National Support Network team.

The cycle of proactive programme promotion, programme calls, engagement with the Research Offices, advice and feedback to enterprise and academic applicants, and National Delegate and National Contact Point meetings with the EU Commission and peer member states (to provide input and feedback on Horizon Europe work programmes and strategic issues) is now effectively all year round.

Kevin Burke, National Director

In this month's newsletter we include updates on our recent Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MCSA), European Research Council (ERC) and European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator wins – it is welcome to see the contribution these three programmes continue to make to our overall Horizon Europe objectives and the impact they have on: (1) the retention and attraction of research and commercialisation talent to the Irish HEI system and (2) the availability of much needed growth capital in our National start up, scale up and investment ecosystem.

And it will be interesting to see how the connections and synergies between Pillar I (ERC and MSCA) and Pillar III (EIC) programmes continue to evolve - the connectivity of ERC proof of concept (POC) projects with EIC Transition Actions is a good example of the graduated, horizontal pathways the Commission is creating across Horizon Europe, which we welcome.

We have updates from three of our National Delegates (NDs) and National Contact Points (NCPs) – from Yvonne Halpin on MCSA results, calls and initiatives; Philip Cheasty on Cluster 5 calls, the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and the LIFE programme and from Padraig Doolan, our Cluster 4 Space NCP.

The Horizon Europe programme is now approaching an interesting mid-way inflection point. The Commission is analysing the feedback received from the largest public consultation process it has conducted to date.

This, along with consultation with member states and the European Parliament will directly influence the second Horizon Europe Strategic Plan 2025 - 2027, which will set out the future direction and policy priorities of the programme and prototype programme approaches that become mainstream in Framework Programme 10.

I hope you enjoy our Newsletter, and we welcome feedback and suggestions on topics and features for future newsletters.

Best regards,

Kevin
