Horizon Europe Ireland - June update

Horizon Europe National Support Network team activity

The National Support Network team is pleased to introduce you to Micol Martinelli who has taken over as both the National Director for Horizon Europe in Ireland and as National Contact Point (NCP) for EIT (European Institute of Innovation and Technology) on an acting basis.

Micol is based at Enterprise Ireland on the R&I Internationalisation team and is the Programme Manager of Career-FIT and Career-FIT PLUS. She will host the next Network team meeting with Research Offices which takes place on 9 July - we look forward to working closely with her!

EIC Accelerator interviews in Brussels

More than a dozen Irish applicants have successfully made it through to European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator interviews which are scheduled face-to-face in Brussels later this month. Over the last week, mock interviews to prep applicants have been taking place at Enterprise Ireland - we wish all candidates the best of luck! Meanwhile, the EIC Community team has just released the updated EIC Business Acceleration Services (BAS) offer - you can find out more about that here.

New success story spotlights Limerick company
"Being part of one successful consortium in a highly competitive call is a huge achievement, so being part of two winning consortiums in the same period is incredible for the organisation," says Colm Gaskin from Limerick company 20FIFTY Partners. In this month's newsletter, Mark Sweeney looks at opportunities under the Circular Biobased Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) which has €213m available under the 2024 Call for Proposals. Irene Castellano Pellicena outlines the open opportunities under the Health cluster and issues influencing its future while Willie Ryan reports on Soil Mission activity taking place in Ireland during June.

National Support Network team updates

Mark Sweeney, National Contact Point (NCP) for Horizon Europe Cluster 5 - Climate, Cluster 6 - Environment and NCP for Climate Adaptation Mission, Enterprise Ireland

Ireland performed extremely well in the 2023 CBE JU Call with several successful Irish participants. The €8.7m Rural BioReFarmeries project coordinated by MTU's James Gaffey is one example - read about this and more open opportunities under the 2024 Call for Proposals in Mark's article.

Irene Castellano Pellicena, National Contact Point (NCP) for Cluster 1 – Health and NCP for Cancer Mission, Health Research Board

In the first half of the Horizon Europe programme, Ireland secured €71.28m in funding under the Health Cluster including the Cancer Mission and the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) Partnership.

In this article, Irene highlights open and upcoming calls in the Health area and looks at issues influencing the future of the cluster.

Willie Ryan, National Contact Point (NCP) for Horizon Europe Cluster 6 - Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment and NCP for the Soil Deal Mission, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine

A Soil Mission National Engagement Event is planned for Ireland as part of the NATI00NS project, a European initiative aimed at promoting soil health and sustainable land management practices through targeted funding opportunities. The event aims to promote the Soil Health LLs Call Topics for 2024 to Irish stakeholders. Discover more here.

Headquartered in Limerick, 20FIFTY Partners has over 20 years’ research experience in water stewardship, circular economy and broader sustainability. The company recently secured €1.2 million in Horizon Europe funding to continue its research on water circularity across two projects.

European semiconductor research labs including the Tyndall National Institute in Cork are set to benefit from €2.5bn funding under the EU Chips Act to develop and test the next generation of advanced chips

The European Partnership for Animal Health & Welfare is the second of the new European research partnerships being rolled out under Horizon Europe following the launch of the Agroecology Partnership in April.
