Horizon Europe Ireland - Summer update

€18.75m European Innovation Council (EIC) win for Lios and CroíValve
Irish companies CroiValve and Lios have been celebrating - both women-led companies were recommended for funding approvals of up to €18.75m in the latest competition under Horizon Europe’s EIC Accelerator Programme.

959 applications were submitted to this latest EIC Accelerator competition with 150 companies subsequently selected for interview resulting in a total of 40 funding awards to 16 countries. The 40 companies were allocated funding of up to €229m in a combination of grants and equity investments. Almost one third of the selected companies were led by a woman in a key leadership role such as CEO, CTO or CSO. More details here.


ERC Advanced Grants win for UCD researchers
More good news! Two UCD researchers have been awarded €5m in ERC Advanced Grants for their groundbreaking research. Congratulations to Professor Kylie Jarrett and Dr Barry Waddell who were among 281 researchers to receive awards last month for their projects. You can read the full story here.

Social Sciences and Humanities Opportunities
A guide to "Opportunities for Researchers from the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) in Horizon Europe" for  Work Programme 2025 has been published. This is an important resource for researchers with SSH expertise as well as project coordinators looking for cross-disciplinary partners. You can access the document published by Net4Society here.

Canada collaborations
Horizon Europe National Director Kevin Burke joined Liam Cronin, Director of Innovation at UCD, and members of a Candian Trade Mission, Clare Barnett and Aretha Phillip, at NovaUCD last week for discussions on potential collaborations between Ireland and Canada. Canada's association with Horizon Europe was formalised this month last year allowing researchers and universities to participate in collaborative projects under Pillar 2 of Horizon Europe.


National Support Network team updates

We have a new team member! Helen Murphy from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is joining the Horizon Europe National Support Network as the new Cluster 6 National Delegate taking over from Willie Ryan. Willie will continue to work on the Soil Mission for the time being. We also said goodbye to our Cluster 5 Energy NCP Ann-Marie Colbert in SEAI and will be announcing her replacement soon - thanks Ann-Marie for all your work and contribution to the team!

Meanwhile, we have programme-specific updates from NCPs in this newsletter: Cluster 6 has a budget of €950m in the 2025 work programme - National Contact Point (NCP) Mark Sweeney highlights the opportunities for Ireland as well as in the Soil and Ocean Missions. Mark Sweeney, National Contact Point (NCP) for Horizon Europe Cluster 6 - Environment, Enterprise Ireland

To date, Ireland has secured €140 million under Horizon Europe's Cluster 6 and there's a budget of €950m available in the 2025 work programme.

In this article, Mark highlights key opportunities in bioeconomy, soil health, and ocean restoration, along with updates on major projects such as WATSON and SCORE.

Irene Castellano Pellicena, National Contact Point (NCP) for Health, Health Research Board

Irene highlights Ireland’s success in securing over €92 million to date, leading projects in areas such as cancer, mental health, rare diseases, and AI-driven healthcare. She also outlines key funding opportunities for 2025 and shares insights into the evolving strategic direction of the Health Cluster.

With Horizon Europe funding of €1.5 million, the Irish-led CARDEA project has facilitated formal recognition of the Research Manager role for the first time by developing a Competency Framework, a Career Progression Model, and training and development programmes that will establish professional research management as a        valued career choice within the European Research Area (ERA).                                  
Carbon capture technology takes off at Dublin Airport

Groundbreaking technology that captures the global-warming gas carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is being put through its paces at Dublin Airport as part of the EIC-funded Airin Motion project.

EU Technology Council Advances Strategy on Advanced Materials

On June 25th the Technology Council for Advanced Materials gathered for the second meeting since its establishment in 2024. It marks another milestone for implementing the EU’s Strategy on Advanced Materials for Industrial Leadership.
