Horizon Europe Ireland - May update

Midterm Horizon Europe analysis
For every €1 of costs to EU society, Horizon Europe is expected to generate up to €6 in benefits for EU citizens by 2045 according to a midterm evaluation report published last week. The report titled “Horizon Europe: Research and Innovation at the heart of competitiveness” offers insights across a number of areas including impact, scientific excellence and innovation. You can read the full report here or, if you're short of time, have a look at the “Delivering High Returns for Citizens and the Economy” factsheet to get some of the key stats.

Work Programmes
Horizon Europe work programmes for 2025 have now been pre-published by the European Commission. The pre-published drafts come with a disclaimer that they “have not been adopted or endorsed by the European Commission. Any views expressed are the preliminary views of the Commission services and may not in any circumstances be regarded as stating an official position of the Commission.” But they are likely to be close enough to the final versions of the respective documents and work programmes that will emerge shortly.

The adoption of the Horizon Europe ‘main’ work programme 2025 and the amended Horizon Europe ‘main’ work programme 2023-2025 is planned for this month. There are a number of Info Days and brokerage events also planned in May - you'll find some of those listed in our Events section further below.

DCU Invent Lunch & Learn
We were pleased to see such strong attendance and engagement at the DCU Invent Lunch & Learn event on EIC supports for researchers. National Delegate Daniela Angione provided a comprehensive overview of the EIC Pathfinder and Transition Programmes while Professor Liam Barry shared his experience with the EIC Transition Challenge programme and EIC National Contact Point James Walsh provided insights on the EIC Accelerator.

Horizon Europe National Director Kevin Burke and DCU's Senior EU Research Development Officer Amy Hall also contributed to the discussions with the research community and representatives from DCU spin-outs. We look forward to continued engagement with the DCU research community on EIC and Horizon Europe calls in the coming months.

Call for applications for the selection of members of the EIC Board 2025
The European Innovation Council's (EIC's) Board is made up of leading innovators who advise the EIC on its overall strategy and performance. The European Commission has launched a call to select new members who have "a strong deep tech focus and a strong track record in any of the areas of growing a deep tech company, corporate innovation, public sector transformation, venture capital, or research". Closing date is 19 May and you can find more information here.

National Support Network team updates
In this month's newsletter, we have a Cluster 6 update from NCP Darragh O'Neill focusing on Horizon Europe opportunities for environmental researchers while Space NCP Barry Jennings looks at the diverse range of topics under the pre-published Cluster 4 work programme. And if you need some funding to help prepare a competitive  proposal, Programme Manager of Enterprise Ireland's Horizon Europe grants, Brigid Burke, provides information on rule changes that will be of interest to applicants, Research Offices and Finance Offices.
