Ireland has officially surpassed the €1 billion mark in funding secured from the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.

With a national target of €1.5bn (1.6%) of Horizon Europe’s €93.5bn budget from 2021-2027, Ireland aims to secure a further €500m in the final two years of the programme. To date, 540 Irish organisations have been awarded €1.02 billion which equates to 2.09% of the €49 billion awarded so far, showing that Ireland is tracking ahead of its target.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless TD said: “Reaching €1 billion in Horizon Europe funding is a significant achievement for Ireland and a clear endorsement of the world-class talent within our research and innovation community. This achievement demonstrates that Ireland is not just competing but is a strong innovator on the European stage."

Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva participated in a number of the sessions across the two days which focused on topics such as startup and scaleup strategies, life sciences and clinical research, gender and academic freedom, and R&D investment targets – and, of course, Artificial Intelligence made its way into most conversations! If you missed it, you can watch back the sessions here.

Connecting Innovation: R&I Networking Evening at EU R&I Days
Alongside the EU's flagship R&I Days, Enterprise Ireland hosted a networking evening in Brussels to bring together Irish and European research and innovation stakeholders.

We were delighted to be joined by Ireland’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the European Union Cáit Moran (pictured on the left with Liam Cronin, Director of Innovation in Nova UCD and Horizon Europe National Director Kevin Burke).
The President of the Board of the European Innovation Council (EIC) Michiel Scheffer was also among the guests (pictured centre with Kevin Burke and James Walsh, EIC NCP) as well as European Commission policy makers and representatives.

Due to the popularity of the event, a bigger venue may be required next year!

New Success Stories

This month, we’ve published two new articles on important Irish-led Horizon Europe projects. The VIGILANT project is focused on tackling disinformation campaigns linked to criminal activity while the Rural BioReFarmeries research project aims to optimise Ireland’s grassland to boost rural economies and deliver environmental benefits – you can read both stories further below.

National Support Network team updates
We’re delighted to welcome Monica Lechea to the Horizon Europe National Support Network team! Monica is the new acting National Contact Point for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) on secondment from ADAPT centre (DCU) and is now based in the Irish Universities Association. She takes over from Jane Carrigan who moved on recently to a new role – we’d also like to thank Jane for her great work and contributions to the team.
