Horizon Europe Ireland - April update

EIC approves €17.5m investment in Galway-based space tech company
Galway-based Mbryonics has been recommended for investment of €17.5m from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator under Horizon Europe. The investment will allow the company establish a significant manufacturing, assembly, and testing facility for optics and photonics in the west of Ireland over the next five years. Countdown to TRA 2024

More than 3,500 delegates from over 50 countries are expected to attend TRA 2024 (Transport Research Arena Conference) as it takes over Dublin's RDS next week from 15-18 April.

New success story: Chipping away at the AI of the future

More from the world of space tech - Ubotica, based at DCU Alpha, is one of 12 partners from 9 countries in the Horizon Europe-funded NeuroSoC project which aims to advance Edge AI technology. In this month's newsletter, National Delegate for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Yvonne Halpin gives a comprehensive update on MSCA programme activity while National Contact Point Darragh O'Neill looks at upcoming opportunities under Cluster 6 Environment. National Delegate for Civil Security for Society Michael Murphy highlights notable Irish participations in Cluster 3 Civil Security for Society where percentage funding allocations to Ireland are well above average.

National Support Network team updates

Yvonne Halpin, National Delegate, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), Irish Universities Association

Ireland is widely viewed as a high-performing country in the MSCA programme. Folllowing results from 2021 and 2022 calls, and partial results from 2023 calls, researchers from organisations in Ireland have been awarded an impressive €85 million in MSCA.

Darragh O'Neill National Contact Point (NCP) for Cluster 6 - Environment, Environmental Protection Agency

There were 1,269 proposals submitted to the 2024 Cluster 6 calls. All are competing for a total budget of €890m in EU funding and results will be announced in June.

In this update, Darragh looks at upcoming opportunities in 2024 and preparation for the 2025 work programme.

Michael Murphy, National Delegate for Horizon Europe Cluster 3 - Civil Security for Society, Enterprise Ireland

Ireland’s good start in Horizon Europe Cluster 3 ‘Civil Security for Society’ has continued. In the third funding round, there were 18 Irish participations in 14 winning projects giving a return of almost 3% of the allocated funding.

In this report, Michael looks at noteworthy participations from Ireland and provides tips for assessing where you might participate.

Edge AI focuses on implementing AI in an edge computing environment, allowing computations to be done close to where data is collected rather than at a centralised cloud computing facility or an offsite data centre.

Advancing this technology is the aim of Horizon Europe-funded NeuroSoC. Project partner Ubotica says the benefits of participation are multifold. Full story here.

UCC is leading a new, multi-partner European consortium to address the hidden problem of Micronutrient Deficiencies in Europe.

Republic of Korea to join Horizon Europe programme

Korea will join the growing group of countries associated to Horizon Europe. The signing of the Association Agreement is expected to take place in the second half of 2024, pending the completion of all necessary ratification procedures on both sides. Learn more here.

An international group of organisations, including Ireland’s Marine Institute, has come together to support efforts to protect the Atlantic Ocean. More info here.

COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is an intergovernmental framework that fosters collaboration among researchers across Europe.  A recently published factsheet highlights Ireland's active participation in COST Actions during 2023. More here.
