European Research Council (ERC) awards €11.4m in funding to Ireland-based rising stars Today, seven Ireland-based researchers have been announced among the ERC laureate grouping of 2024, having successfully competed in Europe’s most competitive and prestigious research call for individual early-career researchers. These newly announced ERC scholars are based across University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, University of Galway and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, University of Medicine and Health Sciences.
This announcement follows the recent success of two Ireland-based researchers from UCC and UCD in the first round of the 2024 ERC Proof of Concept (PoC) competition. ERC National Delegate and National Contact Point Maria Nash has all the details here.
Horizon Europe - the midway point As we enter the second half of the seven-year Horizon Europe programme, thoughts are already moving towards the next framework programme, FP10. While countries debate what has worked and what hasn't worked in the current programme, there are still many opportunities remaining over the next three years. 463 Irish organisations have been awarded €782m according to the Horizon Dashboard which is just over half of Ireland's €1.5bn target - we're on track but more work to do!
Analysis of feedback on Lump Sum Funding
Despite some of the initial apprehension, it looks like Lump Sum Funding is set to stay and will definitely be a feature of FP10 - the Commission has published an Assessment of Lump Sum Funding from 2018-2024 citing positive findings and declaring the funding approach "fit for further roll-out in Horizon Europe and beyond" - you can read the full assessment here.
